Hello Ladies and Gentlefolk!

I'm looking to upgrade from a hunk of junk to something that is distinctly less dire and was wondering if you lovely people would lend me a hand. A few things first though,

1) I am a computer tard and know nothing about computers.

2) I can currently pump out Source between 60-200fps and its unplayable and unreliable.

3) I have a budget of £400 and want a Desktop that will be upgradeable in the future.

4) I can "obtain" an OS and already have a Monitor so there'll be no need to factor that in to the price.

What I have at the moment:

Medion Akoya p6624 (Its a laptop... /cringe)

4Gb Ram

Intel Core i5 m460 @ 2.53ghz

NVIDIA Gt 420m 1gb

Current Ideas:

Thanks guys,

Spark.

those laptop specs would run cs:s around 250/300fps... so i'd just go for something similar to what you've already got..

A very similar system with a half decent graphics card would run CSS at a higher fps easily, running an i5 with 4-6Gb of RAM and a decent ATI graphics card or decent nVidia card (Between £140-£180) would suit it perfectly

Gb  Sparky those specs "should" run it fine,

http://www.glhf.co.uk/ they supply nearly half the scene and they've got really good recommendations so.

Ta for the replies.

Gb  IV Aye I did have a look at them but I've been tipped by a few people that I can get cheaper and to avoid - I won't go in to detail on a public forum though ;D.

Gb  Dollon Qa  eLm Mmmmhm this laptops always really under performed, it has this stupid "Optimus" bullshizzle where it swaps between integrated Gfx and GPU to save battery. Infact my graphics card doesn't even show up in the BIOS.

Gb  Sparky i wouldn't expect a laptop brought from 'http://www.medion.com/gb/electronics?wt_mc=gb.extern.sem.google.komdat' to be that decent, also bare in mind that most those specs would be the mobility edition.

Gb  Sparky Cheers.

I'm upgrading sometime this week or next week, and getting a 5770. I require at least a 450W PSU though. I've been looking on Scan, and there's a bunch of 450W PSU's made by Colours IT, Rasurbo, Alpine, Storm, Coolermaster, EZCool etc.

However i've been told that a 450W PSU by them, won't be 450W? But if I get a Corsair 450W PSU which costs more for example, will be 450W?

Whats your opinion on this matter? Q_Q

Lb  KYANITE

Mate... i'd certainly get more than 450w... Don't want no bootlag do we now!

I got a cheap 700w one a while back and its lasted me ages :-)!

does the job perfect!

Lb  KYANITE

Gb  walker Thing is, i'm being told that getting a decent 450W - like corsair or something - is better and more powerful than getting a cheap 750W PSU...

Lb  KYANITE

Yeah that is right. I still think you should get something a bit bigger than 450w though (a) my opinion though!

Gb  walker Yeh I most likely will... but atm i'm trying to come to the bloody conclusion about whether I need a new case or not. My dad, being a dad, refused to get me a custom built PC and got me some Acer one. Decent specs n all, just needs a new PSU and graphics card and it'll be a nice machine.

But unfortunately, I got no idea if a 5770 will fit...

I have no idea if a 5770 will actually fit... i'm asking a friend of mine and he thinks it'll just squeeze in... now he's saying that he thinks my bloody mobo Acer G43T-AM won't take ATI cards wtf is this blasphemy?!

Also, i'll be getting the single slot 5770 so it will be smaller than a regular 5770.

Kya, measure the length of the PCIE connectors and from the rear of the case to the hardrive cover thingy. Then check the measurements with the card and see.

I've just done some measuring. (l x w x h)

Current G210: 16 x 7 x 2.5

5770 XFX Single: 21.6 x 11 x 3.8

I think I can squeeze it in there... I just got off the phone with Scan, and they said that assuming it doesn't fit, and I don't want to buy a new case, I can always swap it for a different card that might hopefully fit lol

03  QCK I'm not rich enough for it to be practical. A 60gb SSD would push me over budget for one, and I cant have a PC using a single SSD. Also, for an SSD to be a smart investment, I would be looking at a higher end SSD. As such I would be paying more than £1/gb and so it wouldn't make sense for a brand new PC and for my requirements, as I detailed in my original post.

Lol, a ssd costs like 120-140 euros, not 60 for 60GB, I got 2 disks, my SSD with my programs running and another hard disk with 320GB space I think, for music and pics and other stuff, I still got 15GB left on my ssd, i don't have any problem xD (i got 300 fps ingame and 170 on inferno)

just my concern is 460watt going to power all that?

Kr  Gabe Newell A few people did mention the PSU to me. Jack from GLHF has said it should be fine but I'm trying to push him to up it to a high wattage and keep the same price. I need the build to be viable for future upgrades aswell so....

Cheers for the feedback :)

Gb  Sparky looks like a solid psu imo, would easily push above 450w if you needed more, but then again you'd shorten its life... 6870 runs fine on my 500w corsair.

Lb  KYANITE

How much is that 460W coolermaster PSU costing you/jack?

Coz there's a decent corsair 500W one going on scan relatively cheap, only like 45 quid or something.

But i guess at the end of the day if your happy with 460W then fair enough, I just think its nice to keep that little bit extra.
