Universal Gaming League

It has taken a few weeks to write up, and many things have changed since then, (I had originally included 4Kings, but they are no more). But I have been determined to look at the UK's domestic scene for Counter Strike Global Offensive, originally I opted to do one single list, literally listing every single British Team I could find, however that would be a pretty boring list, and would be too long for people to really read. Instead I opted to have a series of articles in the build up to the UK's largest LAN, insomnia47 and have today announced the first part of this ongoing series.

The series bases itself from the highly successful article that I wrote on the UK National League, and people had asked what British teams were currently playing in the Counter Strike Global Offensive scene, and whether there could be a need for a UK National League. If you need to remind yourselves of that article you can read here for that.

I will leave people with question marks as to who will be next, but there are a few teams around who are capable of competing, and I didn't want to do the one article, so there will be three.

Article 1 - This current article will examine your top teams of the scene currently

Article 2 - The second article will look at the fringe teams and outside chances (ie Dark Horses).

Article 3 - The final article of the triliogy will give you a brief look at some of the best of the rest + every other team listed.

You can have a read here: The UK CS:GO Scene Part 1

It's a good read, and it's good to see that in fact we're not short of "decent" teams, and it proves there is enough there to have a good domestic league, were it possible (sponsors etc.).

Stability is the key and possible hindrance though, already in your 1st post, and in the top teams there are various question marks over who will last, who will leave etc.

I hope that the future can see as few roster changes as possible, for the sake of the UK and our representation within Europe. Otherwise the "mix" nature of the UK will always see us competing on the outside of the elite.

P.S. - I hope to see as many of these at i-series as possible, battling out for the status of best in the UK!

Well if stability was a word us UK teams could use, then we would have a proper strong scene yeah :P the one thing that deter's sponsors is the fact that teams lack that word stability.

Stability isn't just a UK problem though is it :/

I don't really know, the Danes chop and change quite a bit, but some of their top teams have now settled down a bit.

Since I originally wrote that article, 4Kings folded, and we are led to believe that Reason have also folded, and I wrote this article what about 2 weeks ago, CRG have changed their line up, and Mousesports have changed their line up as well. Along with that fm-eSports TOXiC only added BARBARR for ESWC, the question is how long will that team last?

It's not even at the top level only, whilst there are exceptions to the rule (Perilous, MINISTRY) there are teams who literally chop and change more times than I care to admit throughout the UK scene.

EPS kind of proved that towards the end of it's days when admins would bring in team after team and it'd end up being a mix team full of people who didn't really care.

You could probably say this about the whole of CS but it's just not as visible (aside from mTw's case).

While stability may not solely be a UK problem, it does seem a bigger problem compared to most. Exactly from what Gumpster said, the top teams chop and change that much that we barely even know who is playing with who, and under which org. Other countries tend to have strictish national leagues too, so it's evident that they have better stability, even if only slightly.

Part of the trouble in the UK is that e-sports is still frowned upon as such, and because of that there's a distinct lack of visible passion & ambition other than when in competition.

No-one likes to admit to being keen and because of a lack of national prize funds (as we're currently outplayed amongst the European elite) that there's no real push to achieve.

This filters down through the rest of the scene, with people chopping and changing because they think when you have a rough patch, the easiest thing to do is to blame someone and scapegoat. Then promise everyone & themselves the world before ultimately failing and calling themselves "technically a mix" as they weren't prepared as a team.

Stability would see a rise in the UK scene, and we'd benefit with a national league because of it. Likewise, a national league would help stabilise the UK scene and benefit us all greatly. Which comes first?
